Signs of Spring

Who would believe that after having two snow days a couple of weeks ago that I be saying that spring is just around the corner? Several things have happened this past week that make me believe that it is true and I am so excited for spring to arrive.

One day this week I picked the boys up after work. It was beautiful outside and they were running around in our front yard. #1 found a stick and started playing in the mud. The next thing I knew, mud was splattered all over my car and both of the boys were giggling with delight. I could get upset about this, but they were having so much fun! I would rather see mud puddles than snow piles...signs that spring is arriving.

This week as I was teaching, another sign of spring arrived in my classroom. On September 11th, our class was given a caterpillar. It changed into a chrysalis on September 14th. For 180 days, I kept this thing in my room in a butterfly cage. Everyone who saw it would ask when I was going to throw this thing out because it was probably dead. I couldn't throw it out. I had hope. When the boys would come into my classroom, they would check out the chrysalis and ask when the butterfly was going to come out. I didn't have the heart to tell them that it probably never would. Well...this week my class and I got a great surprise. We came into school one day and saw something fluttering around! The butterfly had finally emerged. Since that day, the boys have wanted to go to my classroom to check it out! #2 wants to know what it is going to change into next. I didn't have the heart to tell him what was probably going to happen to it, since it is too cold to release outside. How long can this butterfly survive?? Until then, we will continue to watch it.

I think spring is almost here!!!

What!?! What is the science behind this experiment? Get some sugar water for that butterfly- if it survived this long, it might make it until summer!!

Are you sure somebody didn't play a trick on you and find some butterflies to plant there???
